2. With a tape measure, measure the distance around your chest directly under the breasts. Let's assume, you measure 34"
3. Next, do some math:
   1. If the number is less than 33", add 5" (It's not)
   2. If the number is greater than 33", add 3" (34" + 3" = 37")
   3. If you end up with an odd number, add one additional inch (37" + 1" = 38")
4. This number is your band size. Write it down or remember it (38 = Band Size)
5. Next, wrap the tape measure around the fullest part of the bust. This is your bust measurement. (Let's say it's 41")
6. Next, do some more math
   1. Subtract your band size from your bust measurement. (41" - 38" = 3")
   2. The number that remains is used to determine your US cup size. See the following chart:

   If... Your Cup Size is...
   Band Size - Bust Measurement = 1/2" AA
   Band Size - Bust Measurement = 1" A

If you have a wider breast that protrudes from the chest less: Try a soft cup style.

If you have a narrow breast that protrudes from the chest more: Try a minimizer or full coverage bra

If your breast doesn't fill the cup: Try a soft cup, a non-molded cup, a demi cup bra, a padded bra, or go down a cup size.

If your breast is too large for the cup: Try a full coverage, a soft-cup, a minimizer style, or move up a cup size.

If you have non-symetrical breasts (Different sized breasts): Try going down a cup size, or a half cup size, if you can find a half cup sized bra. This is very common, by the way.

After doing all of this work, you should be able to find a perfect fitting bra.

Here are some recommendations: First of all, visit a larger department store or a shop that specializes in bras. Next, you'll want to take some time to try them on--You don't rush when you buy shoes, nor should you rush when you buy a bra. When you try one on, pay close attention to anything that rubs or pinches, even if it only does a little--just imagine how annoying it will be over the course of a day. Some people collect vintage shapewear purely for the pleasure of owning a collection of vintage fashion history, others buy to wear and others still buy as an investment. Unlike the modern retro copies there are a variety of pitfalls to negotiate if you are entering the field of vintage girdles and corsetry for the first time. The first question that I am often asked is why someone should buy fifties lingerie when there is already such a wide choice of modern lingerie available. The detailing and hand finishing on exquisite fifties satin bullet bras and the art deco inspired stitching on fifties long line girdles has to be seen to be believed. It would be impossible for modern shapewear, which is mass-produced to come close to this level of workmanship, without costing a small fortune.

The following tips should give you the background you need when starting your own vintage lingerie collection.

Sizing: size specification has altered considerably over the years - you should be aware that a modern size 12 will be considerably bigger than a size 12 from the fifties, and also sizing is varies in different countries - a US size 12 could be a UK size 16!

Materials: It was rubber that gave vintage shapewear its stretch characteristics. The modern counterparts are Lycra and elastane. Sadly vintage lingerie containing latex is particularly susceptible to deterioration over time, even more so if the garments have not been stored in temperature-controlled conditions. If you stretch a girdle and it stays stretched then it will not be wearable and certainly will not be a collectible item either! From the forties onward some manufacturers used a form of foam rubber as padding in their corsets and corselets (effectively a longline bra and girdle joined into one garment). Frequently such vintage shapewear will not have stood the test of time - the foam rubber often becomes rock hard and inflexible or, worse, crumbles to a gritty powder.

All reputable vintage lingerie online stores will check and describe the condition of the fabric, but you do need to be especially careful if you use an online auction site to source your shapewear. Garter clips from this era used a metal frame with a rubber garter tab. So often a beautiful fifties girdle is rendered less desirable by the rubber tab hardening - the first time one tries to open the garter clip the tab cracks and crumbles. Of course if you are very handy with a needle and thread it is possible to replace the garter tabs; the resulting garment will still be a delight to wear but less attractive to the purist collector, for whom original condition and construction is very important.

Condition: The nearer the condition of the garment to 'factory fresh' the more collectable it will be - naturally this is more difficult to attain with items from the twenties and thirties than from the sixties. There is currently little demand for lingerie after the sixties, because at that point pantyhose all but killed the stockings, garters and girdles. Collectors look for garments that are clean, show no signs of wear and tear, no perishing of fabrics, rust or storage marks. Frankly collecting for investment tends to be risky because subtle deterioration can be ongoing without expert care - it is better to collect to enjoy wearing, with the bonus that if you treat the items with care you are likely to recoup your outlay if and when you do decide to dispose of them. Age: It is obvious that an older item in great condition is likely to be more valuable than a more recent example. Check the label - older labels will have the hand washing instructions - if you see the machine washing icons then you are looking at modern shapewear! One clue to age is the older garments will have rubber, cotton, rayon used...more modern garments will have Lycra. Bear in mind that if the labels have been removed from the garment then it is unlikely to be of much interest to a collector. Another clue to age is that items from the forties often had the 'utility label', looking like a pair of 'pac men'. The holy grail for collectors, is to get find 'new old stock', often sold with the acronym 'NOS' - not only will the labels be intact but the original cardboard sales tag will be on the garment, and maybe even the original packaging.

Being able to shop online has boosted the popularity of vintage shapewear, but as with any other collectible item, it is always a case of 'buyer beware' - the more detailed the item description, covering sizing, labeling and condition, and the more detailed the photographs, the more confidence you can have in buying. Youre a mom and youre still thinking about being fashionable? Thats the kind of response I got from someone I went shopping with. Ultimately, the lingerie you choose should be comfortable and make you feel sexy. When you feel sexy, you convey that to those around you. In short, buy what you like and things should work out well.

Although the fashion world has been built on the idea of thin, thinner, and thinnest for the last few decades, there has definitely been a huge revolution, over the last few years especially, to include the other half of our population - the 50% of us who fall into the size 16 and over, full-figured world.

There have been many contributions to this revolution, of course, not the smallest of which is the change in the fashion industry itself. Having breast cancer is not an automatic death sentence, but it does put a person on an emotional roller coaster. I speak from personal experience.

In 2001, I went for my standard mammogram. A suspicious area reveal the same mass as last years test, so another ultrasound was ordered. This time the doctor advised me to schedule a biopsy even though I felt well and had no pain. I was positive the doctor was wrong, but I made the appointment anyway.

At work, I scheduled time off, including an extra day so I could go to the last Diamondback baseball home game to see if they would advance to the playoffs. I was positive the test would reveal I was all right, without cancer.

Back at work, I got the test results of an infiltrating carcinoma stage 2/3 via a phone call. I turned so white, my co-workers wanted to know if I was all right. I mumbled I was okay and gave my primary care doctor the name of the surgeon I preferred for treatment. This surgeon had removed a lump in 1998 and tests showed it was benign and I had full confidence in his skills. Later, I realized this was the beginning of denial, a common experience.

My surgeon went over the potential treatment, but I knew I really had only one option if I truly wanted to get well, a modified mastectomy. Fear now set in.

At first, I refused to talk about my disease or try to put a support group in place. I was going to tough it out. Finally I realized I needed an outlet and began gathering my personal cheerleaders from family, friends, church members, and e-mail contacts I had never met. This was the beginning of reality for my life as it was and dealing with my emotions instead of stuffing them inside. On the third day after I received my cancer news, the beginning of my healing began. My mantra became, this is only a bump in the road.

I even reached out. I went to a nurse friend and had her talk to me about my upcoming surgery. A mastectomy was similar to peeling an onion. Visualizing a peeling onion made me laugh. It was a good way to combat nerves. I felt ready. Surgery was scheduled for October 30, 2001.

Back home after surgery, I healed. My husband even allowed me complete control of the TV remote. Wow! I also started following my dream of becoming a writer. I kept notes of my feelings, which eventually led to a 22-page booklet titled, Breast Cancer Survivor Year One published by Elan Press. I sold it for cost ($5) to my friends or to people who needed help with cancer, either for themselves, or for their friends or family.

My five years of follow-up treatment (taking tamoxifen only, no chemo or radiation) have passed and my life goes on with writing dominating my life. Cancer became the turning point for me to follow my lifetime dream.

Points to understand to help you recover:

1. Support group are the first line of defense. They can be found online and locally.

2. Make sure you have developed relaxation techniques for yourself. Choose something easy to do that really takes tension away for you. Some suggestions are watching funny movies at home, listening to music, or reading a book.

3. Understand what drain tubes are, why you need them, and most of all, make sure someone shows you how to keep them in place by fastening the tubes to a shirt or a nightgown. Your doctor can explain all about drain tubes and some hospital nurses can usually show you how to fasten those tubes to a shirt.

4. Take lots of time to decide to wear prosthesis (fake boob) or to have reconstruction if you have a mastectomy.

5. Have someone show you what prosthesis looks like (check with a cancer support group or someone who has gone through this process; hospitals often can help you make this connection). Hold it to see how it feels and ask about the type of special bra you will need to wear if you choose to wear a prosthesis.

6. Ask about buying special bras for prosthesis (usually checking with your insurance gains this information, although cancer support groups and hospital cancer help can give you information to get you started) and know what a fitter does to ensure you are fitted correctly for these items.

7. See if you can find someone who sews to see if they can convert the bra portion of a regular swimsuit with pockets to hold a prosthesis. Thats cheaper than buying a commercial suit at $100! I now take the soft, stretchy cloth covering for my prosthesis and pin it to the swimsuit bra portion to hold my prosthesis in place.

8. Make sure you understand your doctors instructions for caring for your arm if lymph nodes are removed to check for cancer cells. Sometimes you may be limited for lifting a number of pounds, and after a healing time, you will need to do exercise to ensure you have mobility for future arm use.

Most of all, remember, with having a mastectomy, you will go through a grieving process for what was lost. Allow yourself to grieve. You might look and feel different for a short time. The happy side of this loss is youll be getting rid of something that can kill if left untreated.
